Chinese Shar Pei Picture

In a typical Chinese Shar Pei picture, you’ll see a heavily wrinkled dog with an intelligent and friendly expression. Although, dogs with a tight skin also occur in the breed. There are three coat types of the Chinese Shar Pei: the horse-coat, the brush-coat, and the bear-coat, which is not recognized by the AKC. The horse-coat is very prickly, off-standing, and rough to the touch. This coat variety was developed to aid in dog fighting, as a short prickly coat and loose skin make the dog difficult to grab. The brush-coat is smoother to the touch and longer, but up to one inch in length. Most modern Shar Pei dogs have a brush-coat.

The bear-coat is rare. It’s considered to be a step back to the Chow Chow (the ancestor of the breed.) Shar Pei dogs with bear-coat are often confused with the Chow Chow. An unknowing buyer cannot distinguish between a Chow Chow picture and a bear-coated Chinese Shar Pei picture. Such coat type is characterized by a dense undercoat and a length exceeding one inch. Bear-coated dogs are popular mostly as pets, as they cannot compete with other coat types in dog sports. Soft and wavy coat are also disqualifying faults.

As it can be seen in a Chinese Shar Pei picture, all coat colors are accepted in this breed. Solid and sable coats are preferred in the Chinese Shar Pei. Solid dogs may have darker shading on the back and on the ears. Lowered, parti-colored and spotted patterns also occur in the breed, but they are disqualified from the show ring.

The size of the Chinese Shar Pei varies from 18 to 20 inches at the withers; the weight of these dogs varies between 40 and 60 pounds. The body length in these dogs is equal to the wither height. The head of the Chinese Shar Pei is large and massive, covered with profuse wrinkles on the forehead and cheeks. The eyes of these dogs are small and sunken; the ears are very small, lying flat against the head, triangular, and rounded at the tips. In a Chinese Shar Pei picture, you can see that their tongue, roof of mouth, flews and gums are bluish-black.
