Shar-Peis with genetic diseases mustn't be used for breeding. Among dangerous diseases that can impair the breed are eye conditions like entropion, which is rolling in of the eyelids, amyloidosis, which means abnormal disposition of amyloid protein in the dog's body, ear infections and narrow ear canals.

Skin fold pyoderma and demodectic mange are among skin diseases known in the Shar-Pei. Hypothyroidism, elbow and hip dysplasia, immune-mediated kidney disease and FSF (Familial Shar-Pei Fever) are also mentioned as diseases frequent in this breed.

A responsible breeder's concern is to produce not only a healthy litter, but also the litter that meets the standard requirements. Puppies can inherit excellent appearance and temperament only from their high quality parents. However, when the Shar-Pei puppies are born, the breeder's task is not yet accomplished. Socializing the puppies, feeding them properly, having them immunized and vetted and looking for potential responsible Shar-Pei owners, is a part of a responsible breeder's job.

Shar-Peis are not a breed for all. They are unique as every other dog breed. However, Shar-Peis are both unique and demanding.
