Shar Pei

The Shar Pei originated in China many centuries ago, though its ancestry in uncertain. Possibly, this breed is linked to the Chow Chow, as both these dogs have a dark purple tongue. The Shar Pei has always been used as an all-purpose dog. It is good at guarding the house, protecting and herding the stock, and fighting with other dogs. The loose skin of the Shar Pei was developed to aid in dog fights, as it made these dogs difficult to grab. The Shar Pei was not popular in the USA and Europe till the 1970s when several dogs were exported from China to save the breed from the extinction. First, Shar Pei dogs were very expensive, but in several decades, they became common and not very expensive.

The Shar Pei is characterized by intelligence and strength. These dogs are described as independent, though loyal. They are able to solve problems and don’t like to follow orders slavishly. Many Shar Pei dogs tend to dominate and should be obedience trained since early age. This breed needs a confident and devoted handler able to control a strong and self-assured dog. Firm, but gentle and consistent training is a must with a Shar Pei. It may be difficult to establish leadership over a Shar Pei for a soft and uncertain person. Well-trained Shar Pei dogs are easy-going and friendly with the family and strangers. If introduced to cats and other pets since the early age, these dogs don’t have problems with them, but some dogs have a strong hunting instinct and should not be trusted with smaller pets.

In spite of the frowning appearance, the Shar Pei is very affectionate. It can make a loving pet and hard working watchdog for any family. A pet of this breed is easy to keep. Shar Pei puppies are easy to housebreak and socialize. Much in the personality, temperament and behavior of the Shar Pei depends on the bloodline it comes from.

Most Shar Pei dogs hate water and should not be bathed often. This breed is suited for apartment living only if given enough exercise. Very sensitive to heat, the Shar Pei should not be exercised in hot weather and should always have fresh water available.
